The Sons of God and Daughters of Men

1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.

Sons of God (Notes)
  • Forced Marriages: Some believe that this verse may be pointing to the women not having any say in the matter, especially due to the supernatural nature of the sons of God.
  • Sons of God: The Hebrew phrase “bene elohim” is a phrase consistently used in the Old Testament to refer to angels. They are also a rank of angels on the Hebrew Hierarchy of angels. However, there are some that believe that the entire lineage of Seth was good (Sethite Theory). Although there is no scriptural basis for this belief, it still persists in the modern church. All of Seth’s line was wiped out in the flood, with the exception of Noah, his three sons, and their wives.
  • Daughters of Men: The Hebrew phrase “benoth Adam” seems to indicate that this is a reference to all human women, and not just a subset (descendants of Cain). The literal translation of the phrase is “daughters of Adam”, with Adam being interpreted to refer to mankind in general. Cain’s name is never mentioned in the text, nor are his descendants referred to as “daughters of men” anywhere in scripture.
  • Peter’s Testimony: Peter refers to the “angels that sinned” (2 Peter 2:4), and were cast down to “hell” (Tartarus in the original Greek). This is the only place in the Bible that the word Tartarus is used. In Greek mythology it was the outer darkness, reserved as a special place of torment separate from hell.
  • Jude’s Testimony: Jude refers to angels going after “strange flesh” (Jude 1:6-7). The phrase “even as” indicates a comparison to the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah, and not a changing of subject. In Sodom, the people wanted to have sex with (know) the angels (Genesis 19:5), and Jude points to the same scenario, but this time with angels going after humans.
  • Outside Sources: Almost every culture outside of scripture contains similar stories of angel like beings descending from the sky, taking humans against their will, and having hybrid children. In the Greek and Roman mythology the offspring of the gods and humans were called “demigods” and “heroes” (Hercules, Perseus, Achilles, etc.). In modern belief systems, some believe that aliens are taking human women and creating hybrid offspring. The subject doing the taking changes with time and culture, but the overall story stays the same.

And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Giants (Notes)
  • Giants (nephilim): The belief that the nephilim were the hybrid sons of fallen angels and human women, predates the belief that the "sons of God" refers to the lineage of Seth and "daughters of men" refers to the lineage of Cain.
  • Mighty Men (heroes of old): Some translations uses this phrase instead of "mighty men". The heroes of mythology were believed to be hybrid sons of the "gods" and human women. This leads many to believe that there is an intentional association being made in order to connect the nephilim of the Bible to the heroes of mythology.
  • Also After That: This phrase seems to indicate that after the flood, giants arose again due to more fallen angels having children with human women. The same cause for the first outbreak of giants before the flood. This is referred to as a "2nd incursion".

The Wickedness of Mankind

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

The Dimensions of The Ark

14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

The Size of Noah's Ark (click to expand)

Noah's flood is probably one of the most disputed stories in the Bible. Many paintings depict a cartoonishly small boat with Noah and the animals poking out of the top. Here are the actual dimensions of Noah's ark.

  • The length of Noah's ark was 300 cubits (450 feet).
  • The width of Noah's ark was 50 cubits (75 feet).
  • The height of Noah's ark was 30 cubits (45 feet).

The Space Inside The Ark

  • The ark had three levels (15 feet per level).
  • Each level had 33,750 square feet.
  • The total square footage of the ark was 101,250 square feet.
  • Total size = 1.757 football fields.
  • Total space = 1,417,500 cubic feet of space.

The Warning of The Flood

17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

18 But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

20 Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.
